From 1929 the
Deutsche Reichsbahn Gesellschaft (DRG) developed a riveted all-steel
design from the express train carriage of 1923/26. The 3-class, 4-axle
carriage 14 102 ‘Hamburg’, belonging to the type ABC4üwe-29, with 3
classes in one carriage. It is one of 186 built in 1929 in the works
at Wismar. Only 2 of the type remain today. The other example is in
the railway museum in Nürnberg. Until 1982 the carriage was in service
in Osnabrück, but it was only after 1993 and thanks to support from
the Nordrhein-Westfalen Foundation that it could be thoroughly
restored. When overhaul of the running gear became due in 2000 we
decided to give the whole carriage a thorough overhaul. Both bogies
needed a lot of work, and we entrusted this to the Czech works in
Pilsen. In addition to the bogies, the bodywork was to be restored.
Wooden seating was to be installed in 3rd class, while 1st and 2nd
class were to be newly upholstered. Numerous drawings had to be
prepared for the inner restoration and occasional difficulties arose
when translating into Czech. This has led to an extended stay in the
works.
